This information is provided for general educational purposes only and should not be considered legal, tax, or financial advice. Customs and tax obligations vary by jurisdiction, and buyers should consult their local authorities or advisors for official guidance.

When purchasing an artwork from an international seller on Arttoo, your shipment may be subject to customs duties, import taxes, or tariffs. Arttoo does not calculate or collect customs fees—they are determined by local customs authorities. This guide explains what to expect from purchase through delivery, including who pays fees and how they’re handled.

What are customs fees and tariffs?

Customs fees and tariffs are additional taxes or duties imposed by governments on imported or exported goods. They’re usually based on the material, category, or declared value of the artwork. These fees are calculated by the local authorities at the point the artwork physically enters the country. Rates generally remain stable, though they can fluctuate due to regulatory changes.

Each country has its own rules and processes for importing fine art. We recommend checking your country’s official customs website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

💡 For example: under current U.S. import regulations, many fine art objects may qualify for tariff exemptions. These exemptions have historically reflected recognition of the cultural and expressive nature of art. However, some design objects, open edition artworks, and other reproductions may not be considered fine art under that exemption.

Who is responsible for paying these fees?

The buyer — who is the “importer of record” — is responsible for paying these fees.
The shipping carrier will typically provide a link where you can make payment through their online portal. Once payment is received, the customs agency will release the artwork for final delivery. Delayed payment may lead to delivery delays, additional charges, or the artwork being returned to the seller.

When and how are fees collected?

The customs office will determine applicable fees once the artwork enters your country.Fees are typically calculated based on factors such as:

  • The artwork’s declared value
  • Package size and weight
  • Country of origin
  • Destination country

The local customs authority or shipping carrier will contact you directly to collect payment of applicable fees.

How does Arttoo handle these fees by purchase channel?

“Purchase” or “Make an Offer”

  • Prices include any VAT owed to the country of origin, but exclude customs fees.
  • Applicable customs fees will be billed separately by your shipping company or local government.
  • If shipping to a U.S. address, applicable sales tax will be added at checkout. To claim a sales tax exemption, email your resale certificate to orders@arttoo.co .

“Contact Gallery”

  • Taxes and fees may vary by gallery. Discuss these directly with the gallery before purchasing.
